About this size
At this diameter a dowel pin is doing delicate work: locating a lens cell, aligning the halves of a small instrument housing, or acting as a hinge pin in a hand-held device. Pins this fine are easy to bend during assembly, so the receiving holes want to be on-size and square, and press fits want an arbor rather than a hammer. Handling is usually the limiting factor rather than the pin itself.
17-4 PH in the H900 condition is the choice when a stainless pin has to be strong rather than merely corrosion resistant. Precipitation hardening gives it strength approaching alloy steel while keeping usable corrosion performance, which suits instrument mechanisms and load-bearing locating pins. H900 is the highest-strength and least ductile of the aging conditions, so it favours shear duty over anything that wants to flex.
Specified in millimetres, the diameter tolerance is computed as an ISO 286-1 IT band rather than a fixed figure, so it tightens as the diameter falls — a 2 mm pin at h7 is held far closer in absolute terms than an 8 mm one at the same grade. Grades h5 through h8 are offered in metric, all of them shaft tolerances that fall at or below the nominal diameter. Which grade a given assembly needs is the designer's call, and the configurator prices each of them so the choice can be made against real numbers.
Need a different length?
This page prices a 6.000 mm pin, but the length is not fixed. The same 1.500 mm diameter is turned to order at any length between 0.508 mm and 101.6 mm — enter the one you need and the price updates immediately.
That is usually the reason to have a pin made rather than bought. A standard pin comes in standard lengths, so an odd length means cutting one down, which leaves a raw end to re-finish and puts the length tolerance at the mercy of whatever did the cutting. A pin turned to length arrives finished on both ends and held to ±0.1 mm. More on that on the custom length dowel pins page.
