Custom Length Dowel Pins
Standard dowel pins come in standard lengths. When the assembly wants 0.437" and the shelf offers 0.375" or 0.500", something has to give — either the design moves to suit the pin, or the pin gets cut down to suit the design. The second is the more common answer and the more irritating one, and it is the reason this page exists.
Cutting a pin to length sounds trivial and rarely is. The cut end comes off raw and wants facing or deburring before it will enter a hole cleanly. The finished length ends up as accurate as whatever held the pin while it was cut, which is not the tolerance the drawing asked for. Any chamfer or radius that was on the removed end has to be put back. For two or three pins that is a slow afternoon; for a hundred it is a small production run nobody scheduled.
A pin turned to length skips all of it. Choose the diameter the hole is already reamed for, choose the length the assembly actually wants, and both ends arrive finished with the chamfer or radius specified, held to the length tolerance shown on the quote. Diameters run from 0.015" to 0.375" and lengths from 0.02" to 4", with no minimum order and a price that appears while you configure rather than after an enquiry.
