Alloy Steel 4140 Dowel Pins

Chromoly alloy steel — high strength and toughness.

4140 is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel chosen for strength and toughness rather than corrosion resistance. As a dowel pin it suits tooling, fixtures and machinery where the pin carries real shear load in a dry, benign environment. It will rust without a coating or oil, so it is a poor choice anywhere near moisture, and it is magnetic, which rules it out of some instrument work.

4140 pins belong in tooling and machinery — press tools, fixtures, and mechanisms where the pin is a load path and the environment is dry. Anywhere with wash-down or humidity, an uncoated 4140 pin will corrode, and a stainless pin avoids the coating step altogether.

Any length, not just the stocked ones

The diameters below are the standard nominal sizes, because that is what a hole is usually reamed for. The lengths are not a constraint: anything from 0.02" to 4" can be turned to order, which is the step that otherwise means cutting a stock pin down and re-finishing the end. Diameters run from 0.015" to 0.375", including sizes between two standard ones.

No pre-priced size pages are published for Alloy Steel 4140 yet, but it is fully available in the configurator — enter any diameter and length for an instant price.
