About this size
Pins in this range are the workhorses of fixture and tooling work — locating plates, indexing sub-assemblies, and holding alignment through repeated teardown. There is enough cross-section here to take real side load, so the usual failure mode is a worn or bell-mouthed hole rather than the pin. If a fixture is opened often, a slip fit in one half and a press fit in the other saves the hole.
316 is the default when the part will see saline, cleaning chemistry, or repeated autoclave cycles. The molybdenum addition over 304 buys meaningful pitting resistance, which is why it dominates medical and marine work. It is gummier to machine than the free-machining grades and work-hardens readily, so it is turned slower here — that shows up in the price rather than in the finished tolerance.
Specified in inches, this pin is turned to a fixed shop band rather than a computed ISO grade: h8 holds a thousandth, h7 half a thousandth, and h6 two tenths. That is usually how a US drawing calls out a locating pin, and it keeps the tolerance conversation in the same units as the hole it goes into. Inch stock also tends to be what a domestic shop already has on the shelf, which shows up in the lead time more than in the price.
Need a different length?
This page prices a 1.0000" pin, but the length is not fixed. The same 0.2500" diameter is turned to order at any length between 0.02" and 4" — enter the one you need and the price updates immediately.
That is usually the reason to have a pin made rather than bought. A standard pin comes in standard lengths, so an odd length means cutting one down, which leaves a raw end to re-finish and puts the length tolerance at the mercy of whatever did the cutting. A pin turned to length arrives finished on both ends and held to ±0.005". More on that on the custom length dowel pins page.
