About this size

This is the size range most precision assemblies actually use. A pin here carries enough shear strength for real location duty while still fitting the compact bolt patterns typical of surgical instruments, optical mounts and small fixtures. Two pins at this diameter, set as far apart as the part allows, will locate a plate far more repeatably than one larger pin in the middle.

17-4 PH in the H900 condition is the choice when a stainless pin has to be strong rather than merely corrosion resistant. Precipitation hardening gives it strength approaching alloy steel while keeping usable corrosion performance, which suits instrument mechanisms and load-bearing locating pins. H900 is the highest-strength and least ductile of the aging conditions, so it favours shear duty over anything that wants to flex.

Specified in inches, this pin is turned to a fixed shop band rather than a computed ISO grade: h8 holds a thousandth, h7 half a thousandth, and h6 two tenths. That is usually how a US drawing calls out a locating pin, and it keeps the tolerance conversation in the same units as the hole it goes into. Inch stock also tends to be what a domestic shop already has on the shelf, which shows up in the lead time more than in the price.

Need a different length?

This page prices a 0.5000" pin, but the length is not fixed. The same 0.1250" diameter is turned to order at any length between 0.02" and 4" — enter the one you need and the price updates immediately.

That is usually the reason to have a pin made rather than bought. A standard pin comes in standard lengths, so an odd length means cutting one down, which leaves a raw end to re-finish and puts the length tolerance at the mercy of whatever did the cutting. A pin turned to length arrives finished on both ends and held to ±0.005". More on that on the custom length dowel pins page.
